On Monday 21 March at 6pm, the University of Michigan’s Professor Patricia Simons will give a public lecture on Jacopo Tintoretto’s Susanna and the Elders.

LECTURE ABSTRACT

In this Power Lecture, Professor Simons is rethinking Tintoretto’s Susanna and the Elders, a painting that is commonly read as a case of male voyeurism, in subject and purpose, or as mere moralising allegory. This lecture moves away from each reductive extreme by re-examining the story’s history and visual effect.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Professor Patricia Simons is Professor of Art History, University of Michigan. Her field of study includes the art of Renaissance Europe (primarily Italy, France and the Netherlands) with a special focus on the representation of gender and sexuality.
